Rijeka, July 23, 2024. - Rijeka Gateway, the new container terminal in Rijeka, will use the 5G network, which represents a significant step forward in the evolution of 5G technology in the maritime industry.
Hrvatski Telekom (HT) provides the complete Managed Service service of 5G communication on a turnkey system.
The company Rijeka Gateway was founded by APM Terminals and ENNA Logic for the purpose of developing and managing the terminal in Rijeka, which will start operating in 2025. APMT, as part of the Maersk Group, which oversees wireless connectivity in more than 70 ports worldwide, will test this new operating model (Managed Service by Hrvatski Telekom) in Rijeka and additionally migrate from the current 5G NSA architecture to the advanced 5G SA architecture, thus becoming the first user of a dedicated Network Slice for industrial applications.
- In Rijeka, we are developing one of the most technologically modern terminals, and from the beginning of designing the terminal, we defined the goal of maximally reducing the impact of the terminal on the environment and the local community. The terminal in Rijeka will be the only terminal in this part of Europe with remote-controlled cranes, almost all equipment will be electric, and we are also installing very advanced energy optimization and overall terminal management systems. A high-quality and reliable communication infrastructure is essential for this way of working, and we look forward to collaborating with Hrvatski Telekom," said Peter Corfitsen, President of the Rijeka Gateway Management Board.
– This project shows Rijeka Gateway's confidence in our ability to provide a high availability service for flawless 24/7 port operations. It confirms our strategy in providing business-critical communication via our public mobile network - said Marijana Bačić, member of the Management Board and Chief Operating Officer for business customers of Hrvatski Telekom.
Rijeka Gateway is one of the most extensive infrastructure projects since the founding of the Republic of Croatia, which initiated the comprehensive revitalization of part of Rijeka's coastal area. Rijeka Gateway will be the most modern, remotely controlled container terminal in this part of Europe. With a concession for the next 50 years, it will serve as the main entry point for container traffic to the countries and markets of the hinterland of Europe and will play a key role in the development of the local economy, considering that most of the project contracts will be carried out by domestic companies. The value of the total investment is EUR 380 million, and the project itself has been declared a project of strategic importance for the Republic of Croatia.
