Rijeka Gateway - high-tech solutions for the future "green" terminal that will be a pride of Rijeka

Rijeka Gateway will be fully powered exclusively by electricity from renewable sources

Zagreb, July 25, 2024 - In the area of the future Rijeka Gateway container terminal, which is being jointly developed by ENNA Logic and APM Terminals, demanding construction works are underway. Since the terminal is located almost in the very center of the city, the highest level measures have been taken to ensure that both the construction and later operation of the terminal disrupt the daily life of Rijeka's citizens as little as possible.

Rijeka Gateway will be fully powered exclusively by electricity from renewable sources.

Photovoltaic power plants will be installed at the terminal, and thanks to the electrification of almost all equipment and the use of electricity from renewable sources, the terminal will have a significantly lower carbon footprint than the average comparable terminal. A reduction in CO2 and other harmful gas emissions by approximately 60% compared to conventional terminals is expected.

The terminal will be equipped with a special, highly efficient water management system and a completely new drainage system. These systems ensure that oils, particles, and other harmful substances will not leak into the sea around the terminal. All processes will be strictly controlled to prevent environmental pollution.

Rijeka Gateway has already established cooperation with an authorized noise protection laboratory in the project phase, which assessed the noise level of the terminal considering the installed equipment. A series of measures will be introduced to bring the noise level below the legally permitted limits. For example, RGW will be equipped with a shore power supply system for ships, reducing the need to use ship engines while docked, which will contribute to noise reduction.

Light pollution will also be reduced, and automated lighting systems will be used for illumination, meaning that inactive parts of the terminal will not be lit when not in use.

In an interview with Novi list, Tomislav Žunić, CFO of Rijeka Gateway, spoke about the numerous technological solutions that will be implemented in the Rijeka Gateway project.
