The entire amount placed in five separate auctions totaling 35,445 guarantees of origin was sold

Date publishedJune 4, 2023

The first auctions of guarantees of origin for ENNA Opskrba were successfully held, reported the Croatian Electricity Exchange (CROPEX).

The auctions were held on May 17th, and guarantees of origin for electricity produced in the fourth quarter of 2022 and the first quarter of 2023 at production facilities of privileged producers outside the incentive system were sold. The entire amount, placed in five separate auctions totaling 35,445 guarantees of origin, was sold.

Guarantees of origin from plants using wind, biomass, and biogas were sold at auctions through CROPEX's IT trading platform, achieving the highest price for a guarantee of origin since the auctions began in August 2019, reported CROPEX.

– The demand at the auction and the prices achieved evidently show the increased interest of the European market for guarantees of origin. ENNA Opskrba is actively preparing new auctions that will be held this year and looks forward to continuing cooperation with CROPEX - said Nenad Ukropina, member of the management board of ENNA Opskrba.

Guarantees of origin

In April, ENNA Opskrba signed an agreement on business cooperation with CROPEX on organizing auctions for the sale of guarantees of origin owned by ENNA Opskrba.

The guarantee of origin is an electronic document that proves to the end customer that a certain proportion or quantity of electricity is produced from renewable energy sources (RES). One guarantee of origin is equivalent to 1 MWh of produced electricity. Issued for electricity generated from plants using renewable energy sources or from high-efficiency cogeneration plants.

The system of guarantees was introduced by European directives, while the Electricity Market Act stipulates that the Croatian Energy Market Operator Ltd. (HROTE) is responsible for issuing guarantees of origin for electricity and for establishing and maintaining the register of guarantees of origin. It was introduced to ensure system transparency, track the origin of the primary electricity source, and encourage the use of renewable energy sources.

Buyers of guarantees can thereby reduce their "carbon footprints" and meet sustainability goals, as well as show clients, financial partners, investors, consumers and the general public that they are responsible for the climate, i.e. how they invest in environmental protection and achieving CO2 neutrality.
