Zagreb, 12 February 2025 – After nearly four months of railway disruption caused by devastating floods in Bosnia and Herzegovina, trains have recently resumed running from the Port of Ploče to central Bosnia and Herzegovina.

As a reminder, in October of last year, flooding damaged the railway line and completely halted trains transporting cargo from Ploče to industrial facilities in central Bosnia. This route is particularly important for the operations of the Port of Ploče and ENNA Transport. The Port of Ploče is primarily focused on the Bosnian market, while ENNA Transport conducts nearly 2/3 of its entire transport on this route. Each year, more than two million tonnes of goods are transported by freight trains from the Port of Ploče to customers in Bosnia.

After completing the railway restoration works near Jablanica, freight rail traffic has been re-established along the entire route, and the first freight train from Ploče departed on Friday, 31 January this year. Since the railway reopened, operations have been running without problems, and ENNA Transport has transported 49 loaded trains from the Port of Ploče to date.

During the interruption of railway services, road routes were intensively used. Approximately 400,000 tonnes of goods were located at the port daily, and they were transported to Mostar, where the goods were transferred to lorries and continued to their destination.

The restoration of the railway and the normalisation of rail traffic have greatly facilitated the transport and operations of both the Port of Ploče and ENNA Transport. For example, one train from Ploče can carry around 1,000 gross tonnes of goods, requiring only one document (a consignment note), whereas transporting the same amount of goods would require 40 lorries and 40 consignment notes. Additionally, the cost of railway services is significantly more affordable than road transport.

Reopening the railway has reduced truck traffic and congestion at border crossings, while also increasing road safety.

The most important aspect of the normalisation of rail traffic is that the Port of Ploče can once again operate at full capacity, as can ENNA Transport.

The railway line near Jablanica was repaired ahead of schedule, thanks to a donation from the Turkish construction company Cengiz Insaat, which offered to carry out the work free of charge.
